Continuing the list of things people rediscover every generation, I think it took me quite a long time to realize that I do not belong to a lot of places. I have tried to build a personality that can fit in a lot of places and situations so it was a little difficult to accept that people do not want me to stay.
I am sure a therapist would probably see this and add to the list of things that are wrong with me and remind me that being useful does not mean you are wanted. However, I have now started to use it set my expectations.
First, now I know when to leave. I am one of the few lucky ones who gets to help people. I have time and resources and it genuinely feels great to untie the knots for someone in need. I travel a lot and this really helps me to talk to strangers. They may not want me to be part of their group but thankfully for some reason, strangers trust me enough to accept help which works great for me. Earlier, after helping people, I would have liked to learn more about them but now I smile and say “have a good day”. It took me a long time to learn not to overstay my welcome.
Second, and this is something I learnt quickly as I travelled more, nature wants me. It welcomes me. I belong there. And I think this is probably true about a lot of people I see travelling. When I am in nature, there is no judgement, no confusion and no complicated decision to make. I know I can stay as long as I want. Although I still feel a little anxious when I have to go through people at the gates and there is still the feeling if they want me there but when I walk ahead, I feel I can be myself again. So I just need to follow the rules of the country I am visiting and I can be back where I belong.
I know if a therapist read this, they will probably feel like they are missing a new patient but for now, I will let my decisions and nature heal me.
Il me bienvenue.
